Trip duration: One day or overnight if returning to Sydney from Berry or Jervis Bay, at Batemans Bay and beyond, allow a minimum of two nights.

On the road
Take the Princes Highway south from Sydney. At the Royal National Park, just past the Sydney suburb of Sutherland, take a detour through the park and follow the spectacular coastal road to the outskirts of Wollongong. From here, link up with the highway.

SOUTH COAST

The southern coast of New South Wales, from Batemans Bay down to the Victorian border, is a fisherman’s paradise. Hemmed in by the Great Dividing Range, it is one of the finest areas for fishing, in southern Australia. One of the attractions of this stretch of coast, is the variety of country to be seen with crystal clear blue sea against a backdrop of gentle mountains, lakes, inlets and forests. The towns of the coast are not highly commercialised and make an ideal retreat.

At Kiama, see the spectacular Blowhole where a huge volume of spray bursts into the air soaring from 20 metres to 60 metres. Kiama Beach for surfing, swimming and fishing. Pilots Cottage Historical Museum.

Berry with its old English trees, adding to the charm of this picturesque township. Several buildings have National Trust classifications, including the arts and crafts centre and historical museum.

At Nowra Shoalhaven’s commercial centre, visit Nowra Animal Park. Hanging Rock Lookout gives fine views, with a museum and art and craft centre. Also ‘Meroogal’ historic home and the Naval Aviation Museum on HMAS Albatross with its fine collection of military aircraft.

Take the Princes Highway turn-off at Nowra and follow the road onto the Jervis Bay region. Much of the coastline is scalloped by white stretches of beach such as Vincentia and Hyams. You can visit the untouched bushland, nature reserves, and Botanic Gardens. At Huskisson enjoy a dolphin watch cruise.

Ulladulla, a fishing town, and nearby Milton are at the northern end of a stretch of beautiful coastal lakes and lagoons. Ulladulla Wildflower Reserve, has been set aside for the preservation of Waratahs and Christmas bush. Visit Finland on the Princes Highway, a large indoor family fun park. Lake Tabourie Museum has some interesting displays including Aboriginal artifacts. At nearby Pebbly Beach you can share the seaside with some friendly kangaroos.

The resort town of Batemans Bay, is close to a string of beaches. Daily cruises sail upriver past historic Nelligen, an old steamer centre. Other attractions include Batehaven Birdland and Durras Lake.

Further south and slightly in land is Moruya, a prosperous dairying, timber and oyster-farming centre. Eurobodalla Historic Museum, in the town centre, depicts the discovery of gold at Mogo and the general history of the district.

Narooma is a relaxed and friendly town, well known for its rock oysters, situated at the mouth of the Wagonga River on the Princes Highway. Mystery Bay near Lake Corunna, is famous for it’s coloured sands and strange rock formations. Nearby, the National Trust classified village of Tilba appears today as it did in 1904.

Bega is situated 10 minutes inland from the coast and 2 hours from the best Kosciusko ski fields. It is an important dairying and cheese-making centre, and tours are available. Close by is the Grevillea winery, historic Kameruka Estate and Candelo Village.

The southernmost town of the region is the quaint old fishing village of Eden. The Eden Killer Whale Museum commemorates the whaling, fishing and timber industries, which have made Eden what it is today. Fishing is excellent along the coast, there is a wide variety of fish including rock cod, bream and jew-fish from the beach. Prawning is good in the scattered inlets and trout and perch can be caught in the many rivers draining the mountains.
